Tonight was the last of 5 in our mountain bike club's twoonie race series. I had participated in 2 of the 4 races and decided that making it 3 for 3 at the Chadburn Lake course would be good for me. I can't say I was in the mood (honestly, our weather has been so wet and cold that it is a downer on wanting to be outside) but I had a goal in mind. These races alternated between two courses so I had concrete evidence of how long it took me on May 8th (1:09) and June 5 (1:03) on this particular course. I knew I wouldn't be able to keep up with my bike-wife (seen below moments before her victory) but I thought I could try for a sub-1 hour race since I was well-rested if not enthusiastic.
I chose to ride with (right behind, actually) Kirsten who finished with an almost identical time to mine on June 5th. This was a brilliant idea. Following someone just seems so much easier. You don't have to push the pace (as long as you can keep up) and yet it kept me focused. But early in lap 2 my front tire flatted. It wasn't dramatic or anything, more like a slow leak that got more pronounced as I went up and over some roots on a slight uphill. I rode with another friend, Sky, for a few minutes but then I got off my bike to take a look. Playing around with the tire didn't improve things (in fact, I seemed to make it worse by yanking on the valve) so I decided to walk back to the race start line. At the time I didn't really care that much about not finishing. After all, I was not super in the mood to race to start with. But as the evening wore on and Kirsten finished very close to the 1 hour mark I realized I was kinda disappointed. But that's it for the 2012 Twoonie Race series. That sub-1 hour race will have to wait until next year.
