10:10 sunrise

Happy end of Dressember!  I think I am a little bit in shock that I actually made it.

Today marks the thirty-first day of me wearing the same dress. It was partly as a personal challenge, mostly as a fundraiser for Right To Play. You people AMAZE me - at the end of all this nonsense we have raised over $800 for a really great charity. In case you need a little extra encouragement to make a donation before January 2nd (the day my fundraising effort ends) here is what RTP does and why I think they deserve our support.

Right To Play's mission is to use sport and play to empower children and youth.  In their own words "play is NOT a luxury; it is a tool for education and health. It can bring entire communities together and inspire every individual. A game of football can teach children about tolerance and peace, and a game of tag can teach about malaria. Play helps teach important life lessons and develop skills like cooperation, leadership, and teamwork."

I want to thank each one of you who donated and I need to send a shout out here to the one donor I do not know personally.  I have no idea how you found this blog but, Adele, thank-you.

Even though I have no big plans for tonight, I tried to make my last outfit the littlest bit spiffy.  That is, if you consider the inside layer of a dress purchased at Value Village to be fancy.

Dress - Vero Moda
Headband - Reitman's, I think
Crinoline - Value Village, Richmond.  Used to be part of a dress until I dismantled it
Tights - Eek, I don't remember!
Shoes - Nine West

Happy new year everyone!  I am looking forward to 2013 (and being able to wear jeans).

Dressember 30th has kinda snuck up on me.  Only one more day left in 2012?  Woah.

To be honest, this year has been rougher than most.  Nothing super specific - or at least nothing I am going to detail on a blog.  My year really hasn't been that interesting but I certainly experienced some pretty significant lows.  But everyone experiences ups downs in life. I do figure that the deeper the downs, the sweeter the ups will eventually taste.

I must say that a big positive for the end of the year has been this whole Dressember project.  I have been so touched by the generosity of others.  I've never really tried to fund-raise for anything - at least not since the days of grade school chocolate almond door-to-door sales.  Thanks for being so kind, friends.

If this is your first visit to my blog and you are wondering what this whole Dressember thing is, you can check out my opening and explanatory post.  If you have been reading and thinking maybe you'd like to contribute to Right To Play on my behalf, take note that there are only three days left in which you can do so.  I will wear this dress for one more day and my giving page will remain active until January 2nd.  It would be pretty awesome if we could double my $400 goal.  I'm already at $775 but an even $800 would be amazing.

Love the bike print on this skirt and I love that I have figured out a way to winterize it!  Never underestimate the usefulness of layers!

It has *finally* warmed up.  It was a balmy -9C when this photo was taken.  It was also super windy which I why I am holding the edges of my cape down.

I wore this quite briefly today, out for an excursion to Canadian Tire.  Ben and I are patching and painting around the house this weekend and I have spent much of the day in fleece pants and a sweatshirt.  It's not cheating though - remember my dressember rules.  When it would be a hindrance to an activity, I don't have to wear the dress.

I can hardly believe how quickly this month has been passing.  I'm keen to stop wearing this same dress in three days but I would do it all over in the month of January if I knew I could raise the same amount of money for Right To Play.  You, dear readers and friends, have been so generous to my cause this year.  Thanks again so much.  It really means a lot to me.

10:11 sunrise
15:52 sunset

Oh man, two and a half extra days off work this week and somehow I feel extra tired.  It makes no sense but perhaps I can blame it on all the awesome food I have been consuming over the past four days.

So, it's back to work for me tomorrow.  Remember that if you make (or have already made) a donation of $20 or more you can help me get dressed in the morning.  I'm still going to be wearing this little black dress for the next 5 days but you can have a say in what I look like. Within reason (and yes, I get to be the judge of that) you can detail the rest of what I am wearing.  After you donate, you can make a suggestion and hope I have something like that in my closet or you can check my wardrobe remix set on flickr for ideas.  Leave a message on my giving page or post a comment on the blog.  My co-dressember participant Amanda is helping me out with tomorrow's layers but if you have any ideas.... I'd love to see my Right To Play donations crack the $800 mark by New Year's Eve.

Dress - Vero Moda
Hat - Roxy
Necklace - the Bay
Tshirt - Banana Republic
Tights - Hue
Socks - Smartwool (they are covered in an awesome peacock feather pattern that doesn't really get shown properly here)
Boots - Miz Mooz

For those of you reading who are confused by this Dressember thing,  please read my first post about how I am trying to raise a little bit of money for a very cool charity.

25/31

10:11 sunrise
15:51 sunset

Dressember the 25th began with a beautiful sunrise.  We had friends over for brunch.

Then we went for a ski.  It was frosty at -22C but it felt not too bad given the very cold weather we have had for most of December.

And now we are heading out for dinner at yet another friend's home.  I love having friends who like to cook and who like to invite me over.  Two minutes after I put these tights on I stuck my thumb through them creating a large hole.  Doh!

Dress - Day 25 of one Vero Moda polyester dress
Tights - Reitman's
Shoes - Franco Sarto
Necklace - Made from a brooch given to me by my friend Claire who picked it up in Hollywood

And I will leave you with the fabulous card from my friend Sierra.  As a person who generally doesn't buy Christmas gifts I have been very kindly treated by Sierra, Paula, Julie and Monika this year.  Thanks to them (I need you guys) and to everyone who has been contributing to Dressember and Right To Play.  Love and the kindness of strangers.  Stuff like that is what keeps me from being a complete Christmas grinch.

To those of you who celebrate the holiday - merry, merry to you!

10:11 sunrise

A half day at work today:

This fabulous yellow snow skirt deserves more a more glowing review from me but I don't have a lot of time. The idea is that the skirt is outerwear - like snow pants.  Made by these awesome women in Montreal I am pretty stoked with my new acquisition.

Dress - It's there, under layers (Vero Moda)
Snow Skirt - Fantasyworldheroes
Cardigan - Secondhand from my mother-in-law (Banana Republic)
Tights - Hue
Shoes - Nine West

Tonight is my favourite Christmas tradition - Norwegian dinner at Sierra's and Tony's.  Must run!  Happy Christmas Eve!

Today I bring you another case of dress over dress.

For a backgrounder on what this Dressember thing is, check out my opening and explanatory post.  I'm trying to raise money for the organization Right To Play.

Dress - Vero Moda
Dress - Also Vero Moda (I actually bought them at the same time at the Bay last spring)

Running around doing errands today and just trying to stay warm during the extended cold snap.  Another day at -30C.  Heading to a friend's birthday party tonight!

21/31

10:10 sunrise
15:48 sunset

Happy Solstice!  Today in Whitehorse we experienced 5 hours and 371/2 minutes between sunrise and sunset. We also saw a daytime high temperature of -27C.  The dark days and cold temperatures have nothing to do with staff at the Archives feeling a bit kooky at this time of year....

Better light over the lunch hour to show you the kinda cool details of my skape (part skirt, part cape). I've had this for a few years but I love it.  It's reversible and is printed on one side with leaves and a periodic table and the other with airplanes.  If you're curious, there's a better shot of the print on my flickr site.

Dress - Vero Moda
Skape - Smoking Lily
Tights - Joe Fresh (Superstore)
Shoes - Franco Sarto

If you are confused why this blog consists of photos of me wearing substantially the same outfit, day after day, you can read my original post about this whole dressember thing.

20/31

10:09 sunrise
15:48 sunset

I have to admit, I am starting to see the backside of these 31 days.  Looking at the fact that today is day #20 makes me happy.  I can do this! Only a few more work days and a lot of festivity in between.  Go dressember!

You are reading day #20 of my attempt to wear the same dress every day in December.  For more details, you can check my original post about this whole thing.

Dress - Vero Moda, 20 days in a row now (3 washings)
Belt - Red dotted stretchy thing from a store in Thornbury, ON
Arm Warmers - Whitehorse General Store
Pants - about 12 years old... purchased in Vancouver I think?
Shoes - Clark's

My boss today was adamant that I was not really wearing a dress due to the pants I have on underneath.  I was equally adamant in rejecting his opinion.  How do the rest of you feel about pants under dresses?  Is it cheating?

So my co-dressember participant and I are looking for ways to liven up our portraits at work. Keep in mind that it is bloody cold out (another day below -30C) and we have to be quick with these shots.  Today we went for a "Dressember emergency" but I am open to portrait suggestions.

I've said it before but I want to say again that you, my readers and friends, have made amazing contributions to Right To Play on my behalf.  It seriously warms my heart and I thank ALL of you for your donations.  I really believe that they do cool things.  I have a pretty frozen heart this time of year but looking at their website melts it just a little.  Thanks again.

19/31

10:08 sunrise
15:47 sunset

The cold.  It is fierce.  Another -35C day when this was taken.  Brenda and I managed a three shot burst photo shoot before putting our jackets back on (that's her gorgeous Canada Goose parka on the snow beside her).

Dress - Vero Moda (layer 1)
Dress - Ann Taylor Loft (layer 2)
Sash - It's from another, secondhand, dress
Shoes - Clark's

My sister - yes, my sibling - made a donation to Right To Play this week so that's pretty awesome.  I was pretty sure she didn't read my plea for donations that I sent out to friends and family.  So thanks, Andrea, that was really cool.

Maybe Right To Play isn't your thing but you like this dressember routine and you're feeling charitable? Wander on over to Amanda's dressember blog because she offers you some different charities to choose from.  Plus, she actually looks stylish doing this.

I also want to say thanks for the couple of dressember ideas I have received this week.  I will work on putting those outfits together.  Remember that if you make (or have already made) a donation of $20 or more you too can have a say in what I look like. I'm even open to trying my best to interpret vague instructions like "something the Prime Minister would wear." (I see a sweater vest in my future...)  Help stop the Dressember doldrums and come up with something creative for me!

18/31

10:08 sunrise
15:47 sunset

The weather has returned to a deep freeze.  It was -34C when Brenda and I took this photo at work today. We call it Yukon Gothic.

This shot with the flash better shows off my layering efforts today: two pairs of tights, one pair of wool socks, a skirt under the dress and a pair of wool arm warmers.  Still cold.

Dressember details:
Dress - Vero Moda
Arm Warmers - Pearl Izumi
Skirt - Winner's
Boots - Nine West
Earrings - Corteza (from Montreal)

And an extra bonus too up close shot of my face to show you my lovely earrings.  They are made from leaves that have been cast in clear resin. I couldn't find a website for the creators but this boutique features the designers' work.

December 17th - I've passed the halfway mark, yahoo!!  (For a backgrounder on what this Dressember thing is, check out my opening and explanatory post.  It's just a bit of mid-winter fun that I am documenting on a daily basis.)

Dress - Vero Moda
Sweater - Secondhand. At my previous job a colleague cleaned out her closet and brought in a bunch of clothes she was getting rid of.  I took this.
Belt - Reitman's
Tights - Joe Fresh (Superstore)
Boots - Miz Mooz

Brenda and I took our daily Dressember work photo up a notch with a little kung-fu at the Archives today.

So I have to admit that 17 days in I am tiring of this same dress.  I'm not super creative with coming up with interesting "looks" so there is a lot of the same going on here.  I suppose that isn't the point and I *am* thrilled with the fact that we have raised more than $500 for Right To Play.  It's just.... well, I could do with a new idea or two.

Remember that if you make (or have already made) a donation of $20 or more you can have a say in what I look like. I'm even open to trying my best to interpret vague instructions like "something Lady Gaga would wear." Help stop the Dressember doldrums and come up with something creative for me!

16/31

10:06 sunrise
15:47 sunset

Today was mostly about bikes.  First, we rode them.

Trails were a bit soft but unless you got pushed off your bike by your friends, most stuff was ride-able.

When I got home it was desperation Dressember time.  EEK! Only 2 more hours of light and I had not yet put my dress on!!  So that's what I did.  I just put it on over top of my riding base layers.  Pretty fancy stuff today.

Dress - Vero Moda
Hat - Skhoop
Neckwarmer - Hand-knit moustache made for me by friend and sometime roomie Paula
Long undies - Smartwool
Boot liners - Intuition (my Neos overboots would usually be on top of these but not indoors.  I just stepped outside to take the photo in the light)

As I said at the beginning of this post, today was mostly about bikes.  After our ride, a group of us got together for dinner and to plan a spring bike trip.  We are heading to northern California for a bikecation at the end of April.  This important discussion necessitated appropriate outfits for everyone.  The animals on bikes t-shirts came out.

Dressember modifications: Tshirt by Dark Cycle Clothing and puffy boots from REI.

Don't we look like a good time?  Five women (maybe 6), an RV, wine, bikes and a week in the USA.  It's going to be fabulous.  Thinking about it is getting me through the winter.

Dress - Vero Moda
Cowl - made by my friend and sometime roomie Paula

Jeggings - Yes, the Wal-Mart ones. Bought for a costume, worn more often than I  expected.
Socks - Hue
Shoes - Aldo

Happy Friday!

See that blue thing in the snow behind me?  It's a dog toy.  I found a dog running loose on the Alaska Highway today.  I managed to get her in my car and bring her back to our place so that we could contact her owner.  While she was in our yard she played with some of Mingus' toys.  Anyhow, the super cool part of this story is that as a thank-you, the dog's owner donated to Right To Play - isn't that awesome?!

Dress - Vero Moda
Scarf - The softest, bestest wool pashmina. I bought it when I got married but I can't remember where.
Tights - Target
Socks - Skhoop
Boots - Miz Mooz

13/31

10:03 sunrise
15:47 sunset

Can I just say that you folks are amazing?  Thirteen days into this silliness and you have helped me not only meet my fundraising goal for Right To Play but also exceed it.  Tonight as I sit down to write my Dressember post I am so thrilled to say that together we have raised $500 for an organization that does really powerful things with kids and sport.  Improving self-esteem, developing an ability to resist peer-pressure, learning to resolve conflict peacefully and to problem-solve: these are all things that Right To Play's programs help make happen.  Thank-you, thank-you from the bottom of my frozen winter heart for your donations and your comments here.

It's been a busy week for me and I am feeling the soul crushing darkness of the shortest month of the year. Thankfully, it has been considerably warmer out this week. Even Mingus is now willing to spend a bit of time outside rather than just rushing outside and back in again when nature calls.

Some colleagues said that today's Dressember outfit was cheating because I belted and shortened the dress. Naturally, I disagree.  I am still wearing the same dress, after all.

But, I made it more dress-like for the double-Dressember photo with Brenda.

Dressember Details:
Dress - Day 13 of this polyester beauty from Vero Moda
Pants - Yoga Jeans
Shoes - Clark's
Necklace - Yukon College Bookstore

Please note that the sun now rises after 10am.  This is the time of year where darkness seems to envelop everything, including my mood.

I didn't manage to get outside for a photo during daylight hours so instead you get this beauty taken after work by the glow of the motion detector light outside my house.

And for extra bonus goodness, here I am inside the house.  I like seeing the patterns going on in my sweater and tights in this shot.

Today's outfit:

Sweater - Whitehorse consignment shop
Tights - Gifted by my friend Aisha
Shoes - ballet flats purchased in Toronto last summer (locale)

I successfully dyed my hair last night so I'm feeling pretty good about that today.  It's warm (-5C) out too, so that helps.

Dress - Vero Moda
Cardigan - Reitman's
Skirt - Yard Sale (Takhini neighbourhood) $0.50. The label tells me it's Miss Bergdorf Goodman
Tights - One of the many black pairs in my dresser
Shoes - Franco Sarto

The ribbon in my hair was awesome donor Cheryl's suggestion.  I hope you can see it.  I dug it out of the stationary/gift wrapping box in our basement this morning.  Thanks again so much to everyone who has made a donation to Right To Play.  I have been really touched by your generosity.

Remember that if you make (or have already made) a donation of $20 or more you too can help me get dressed in the morning.  I'm still going to be wearing this same dress for the next 21 days but you can have a say in what I look like. 9:57 sunrise
15:49 sunset

The weather finally changed today.  The bitter cold has passed and, as I type, it is a balmy -12C out there. Woke up to a beautiful sunrise this morning too.

The original plan for today was to do some fat bike portraits for a contest I won last month.  But, because the wind chill was still pretty bad and because we had a lot of new snow fall last night, the photo shoot was cancelled.  I had, however, already donned my long underwear in anticipation of the day so rather than get entirely redressed, I just threw my dress on overtop.  This is the advantage of weekends.

Dress - Still the same one! Vero Moda.
Sweater - Zara
Long undies - Smartwool
Socks - Smartwool
Boots - Neos

Went out for a dog walk with friends later in the day (yes, still wearing the dress - but with a pair of ski pants added to the mix).

Turned out to be a pretty decent day.

So happy it's Friday.  So bummed that it is still -27C.  Environment Canada claims it is going to warm up to -2C on Sunday but I will believe that when I see it.

So I have managed the first seven days of the Dressember challenge - yay me!  If you have been watching my donations page you will see that I have upped my goal from trying to raise $250 to $400.  I have come really close to $250 this first week and so I thought I could try and be successful with a slightly higher number.  You, my awesome friends, have made this possible.  Again, thank-you.

Lunchtime at the Archives (or the 'chives as we sometimes call it - pronounced not like the onion but rather like archives without the "ar").

Todays' dressember details:

Dress - Vero Moda

6/31

9:52 sunrise
15:52 sunset

It is still cold.  Another day at -30C today.

I rode to work though and since it wasn't windy and I was overdressed, it actually wasn't that bad.  I changed into my dress once the sun came up at work and then I popped outside to take this:

At lunchtime Brenda and I went out for our dressember photo shoot.  The light was still beautiful.  We decided we wanted to up the entertainment factor of our portraits.  This is our failed jump shot.  Please note the claw.  I do this with my hands in practically every jump shot I attempt.  Flattering.  I offer it here for your amusement.

Dress - Vero Moda
Sweater - Jacob
Tights - Joe Fresh (Superstore again)
Socks - Smartwool
Shoes - Clark's. Meant to wear boots today but they were a casualty of the bike ride to work (as in, I didn't bring them).

As several of you have asked about the laundering of my dress or whether I wear deodorant, here's the deal. I think we wash our clothes way too often.  So I figured the plan would be that I will wash the dress every Friday night.  And yes, it is the same item of clothing that I am wearing each day, not just the same dress purchased in multiples.  And ya, I'm sporting underarm charm and I make sure that I don't sweat in the dress (ie: I did not bike into work while wearing it).  I also have usually been wearing a wool tshirt underneath so I think that helps.  That said..... it will be time for a bit of soap and water for this polyester baby tomorrow night.  Don't judge me.

Also, my friend Sierra reminded me tonight that I had originally planned to wear the same dress but to let blog readers accessorize it for me through their donations (ie: donate x dollars and you can tell me what to wear tomorrow).  I'm going to try and rig something up this weekend so if that sounds fun to you, stay tuned.
